The Onawa Public Library provides the residents of Onawa and the surrounding area with access to books, library materials, resources, programs and services to meet their informational, educational, cultural and recreational needs. The library promotes reading and the use of library materials, and provides support for community, cultural and historical activities. Through its staff, Board and services, the library builds knowledge, understanding and appreciation of libraries and library resources in those it serves.

The Friends of the Onawa Public Library, through fund raising, has done a lot for the library to include our continued subscriptions to several newspapers, donated toward audio books, 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program, donations every year for the Summer Reading Program, hosted several programs over the years, and many other things. Onawa Library Foundation exists to support and promote our local library with projects they would not be able to complete on their own.  The Foundation can provide matching funds for approved grants and also support projects that are proposed by the Library Director and/or Board of Trustees. In the past we have provided support for the following projects: digitization of the newspapers for uploading to the library website to make nationwide access, matching funds for RAGBRAI grant for plate glass to be added to the upstairs windows for energy conservation and sound deadening, assistance with refurbishing the roof of the original library building, and many other projects.

 

Volunteer to help with programs such as Kids’ Club STEAM Program, story time, and Summer Reading Program and special projects such as maintaining the library yard and butterfly garden, handing out books for Halloween, and many other projects.
